Here’s a Surprise: Kids Say They Want More Field Trips
Do you like field trips? Of course you do! As a matter of fact, 20 out of 20 students want more field trips. But, they are not always easy to put together. You have to fingerprint the parents, and then you have to get the field trip forms in and get the money together. You then have to get all the paperwork approved by the front office and go off campus which drives teachers crazy. This is why there has been a lack of field trips lately. Teachers have a lot to say on the issue. “I think field trips are great,” ...
End of World Predictions Come and Go
Throughout history, people have been predicting the end of the world. This year especially, predictions (and jokes) have been frequent. Why, you ask? Great question. The ancient Mayans kept a calendar that counted the days until the world would end—and according some, that calendar ends on December 21, 2012. And when it does, these people predict that a huge sequence of natural disasters will occur, destroying buildings, causing tsunamis, and killing all who are not prepared. They say that the government knows this is coming, but just doesn’t want to scare people. Videos, articles, and websites on this topic almost always feature ...
For Some, Resistance is Easy
Personally, I'm not that crazy about Angry Birds. I played it once, and only for a minute. However, Leeza Wong, a fifth grader in Ms. Boettner's class, loves this game. She plays it for an hour at a time, and likes the fact that she gets to kill pigs with birds. I prefer the Wii. My favorite game is The Michael Jackson Experience. I think Emma Chang agrees with me. She also likes the Wii. Her favorite game is Wii Sports Resort, and plays it for two hours. She likes it because she gets to go skydiving. A lot of people have favorite video ...

For Musicians at Sutterville The Beat Goes On
Mr. Santiago Sabado is our new music teacher here at Sutterville. His parents owned a music school, and he has been playing instruments since he was 8 years old. He began with the piano, and now he can play almost every instrument. He focuses mainly on playing the trumpet and percussion instruments.
Mr. Sabado took the place of our previous music teacher, Mr. John Doolittle, who has retired. His retirement took place right before winter break. Mr. Doolittle taught at Sutterville for 22 years.
“He is a phenomenal musician. He plays gigs all over the state,” said Principal Lori Aoun, “He was a real treasure and we are going to miss him.”
The transition from one music teacher to the next allowed Sutterville musicians to keep learning without skipping a beat.
Mr. Sabado’s teaching experience started after he graduated high school. He has taught at a number of high schools including Elk Grove, McClatchy, Franklin, Ponderosa, Oak Ridge, Union Mine, El Dorado, and Foothill. He even taught at Sacramento State University.
Mr. Sabado enjoys teaching music because he likes to help students understand it more.
“Music is a part of life,” says Mr. Sabado.
Mr. Sabado is extremely excited about teaching at Sutterville because he enjoys the classes and gets to meet and teach everyone at the school. Teaching at Sutterville is a new experience to him because he is used to teaching in a high school classroom rather than a elementary classroom. We hope Mr. Sabado has a great time at Sutterville and stays for a very long time.

Dance: Kids Call the Tunes
Two Sutterville 6th-grade girls have started their own dance team.
Kayla Colbert and Kha’Lysia Gonzalez started the Sutterville Dance Team. It is for 4th- through 6th-graders who love to dance.
To Kayla, dancing means having a chance to be herself and do what she loves.
And what Kha’Lysia likes most about it is “having fun,” she said.

Bookworm Meetings Fundamental
Epic Readers is not your average after-school program. It was started by a group of 6th graders who wanted to share their love of books with students in 2nd and 3rd grades.
“It’s just fun entertainment,” said Dominique Perez, one of the founders of Epic Readers.
The students read at their own level, and encourage each other to try more challenging books.
Meetings are Mondays and Fridays, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Hope to see you there.

Predictable “Zoo” Still Fun
Who wants to see a movie with every move coming? I know I don’t! That’s why you’re in luck if you go to see “We Bought a Zoo.” The actors make it all come alive, and I was so engaged that I didn’t even notice that the movie was totally predictable!
When I exited the theater, I started to think about all the drama going through the movie. The plot sounds simple. Ben, a man devastated from losing his wife, wants to leave, to get away from his memories. So he buys a zoo.
But, does Dylan really like Lily? It seemed he enjoyed Lily coming to bring lunch while drawing pictures of hate. Does Kelly really feel comfortable around Ben? Questions galore, drama in every scene, but what about the story, was that any good?
What would parents …

Super Bowl a Link to Millions
The Super Bowl is a major sporting event worthy of recognition. It is a battle of one team from the AFC versus one team from the NFC. The two teams, the Patriots and the Giants, fought their way to the top.
More than 75% of Sutterville students interviewed for this story planned to watch the Super Bowl and root for their favorite team. People equally liked the Patriots and Giants, but more people thought that the Patriots would win.
The Giants came out victorious against the team that had many more wins. Millions of people watched the Super Bowl and rooted for their favorite team.

5-Day Trip Has Time for Everything but Homesickness
Sly Park was a lot of fun, and for a lot of people it was hard to pick a favorite. Some said it was the hikes or the food, maybe the new friends. For Hayley Ochoa it was the creek hike and the face painting there.
“It was really cool to learn how to make paint out of sedimentary rocks,” said Hayley.
For Miranda Haung, it was the animal room, and for Delaney Roybal it was song and skit night.
“Did you know you can eat your Christmas tree?” Delaney asked.
Everyone learned a lot—Sly Park is a school after all. Jesse Alvarez, whose favorite part was the hikes, said he learned a lot about nature. Zarah del Duca learned about natural farming rocks on the Emerald Pond hike.
Katherine Leong learned to be open.
I know this seems like more of a moral than something you would learn in a classroom, but Sly Park goes …

Is Football Ban a Permanent Timeout?
As you may know, football has been banned since last year, and you can only play when Mr. C is on watch. Many students believe that it is a dramatic decision and that the authorities should give football a second chance.
Now, you might be a little confused as to why football was banned. Mr. McDoniels says, “It starts as touch, then turns into pushing, then tackle, and then it gets into heated arguments.” In my opinion, I think that this is caused because (no offense) people get mad when they don’t get their way.
Another point that I would like to bring up is that the rules appear to be inconsistent.
So I talked with our principal, Mrs. Aoun, and she said, “Every time students play without an adult, someone gets injured.” That is why Mr. C is out there on …

Memories Last a Lifetime
Sly Park has been a place of learning for generations of Sacramento students. Sly Park is a wonderful place that everyone who goes remembers and would love to go back.
In 1976, the lake in Sly Park almost dried up from drought.
“The lake was almost empty,” said Lawrence Zinky, a student at the time. “I remember walking on the dry lake bed for a short cut.”
This year, some areas around the lake were scarred by fire, and some of the student groups decided not to go to the lake at all.
Sly Park is still the same 6th Grade camp to hike on the trails, play in the gym, learn about nature, and have fun.

Students aren’t the only ones having fun
Most of the kids come back from Sly Park and say it was great! But do you know how the teachers feel when they come back?
Well, I’ve interviewed the three lovely 6th-grade teachers, and all of them enjoyed themselves. For Ms. Apperson and Mr. McDoniels this wasn’t a new experience, but for Mrs. Avis, the GATE teacher, this was a new experience!
The teachers all had different activities they favored. Mr. McDoniels had a tie between “watching the girls dominate the boys in tug-of-war” and the lake hike. For Mrs. Avis, the astronomy was what she favored because she has always loved astronomy. Ms. Apperson liked hiking and listening to the teachers talk about ecology the best.
Mr. McDoniels and Mrs. Avis would agree that it was a more relaxed atmosphere because they were students as well. Ms. Apperson thinks it’s nice that the students and the teachers get to share the …

Five Days at Sly Park Rite of Passage for Generations
Right after Thanksgiving break, Sutterville’s sixth graders took a five-day field trip to Sly Park. After driving an hour and a half, students arrived at an outdoor learning center surrounded by forest. Here students hiked, learned, ate, and played from early morning till 9:30 at night.
Days were full of activity. Imagine not just classroom time and nature hikes, but relays, tug of war, a carnival, a climbing wall, and more. The treats at every dinner built up to ice cream. This memorable trip was a turning point for many of us.
Zack Stehre said his favorite part of the trip was the animal room, which featured a salamander, snakes, hamsters, and other fun animals. Even though a teacher sent him to the rear of the hiking pack for running—who knew this was against the rules?—he thought that “Sly Park was awesome.”
Sutterville kids bunked and hiked with students from two other schools. …
